Swing Weight and Twist Weight: The Numbers That Actually Tell You How a Paddle Plays

Walk through any paddle spec sheet and you'll find the static weight listed front and center, usually something like 7.8 or 8.1 ounces. It's the number everybody checks first, and it's also the number that tells you the least. Two paddles with identical static weights can feel completely different in your hand, and the reason comes down to two measurements that matter far more: swing weight and twist weight.

The good news is that neither concept is complicated, and once you know what counts as low, medium, or high for the shape you're shopping, you can read a spec sheet and know how a paddle will feel before you ever hit a ball with it.

What These Numbers Mean, and Why Static Weight Falls Short

Swing weight measures how heavy a paddle feels when you actually swing it. The key insight is that it's driven by where the weight sits, not just how much of it there is. Picture a hammer. Swing it the normal way and it feels heavy and slow. Now flip it around and hold it by the head. Suddenly it whips through the air with almost no effort, even though the hammer weighs exactly the same. Nothing changed except where the mass sits relative to your hand.

Paddles work the same way. Weight concentrated up in the head makes a paddle swing heavy. Weight down near the handle makes it swing light. Static weight can't tell you which one you're getting, which is why a 7.6 ounce paddle can feel slower in a firefight than an 8.1 ounce paddle. The scale doesn't know where the weight lives. Swing weight does.

Twist weight measures something different: how well the paddle face resists rotating when you hit the ball off center. If you've ever caught a reset toward the edge of the face and felt the paddle torque in your hand while the ball died into the net, you've experienced low twist weight firsthand. A higher twist weight means the face stays put on those misses, which in practical terms means a bigger, more forgiving sweet spot.

That's the whole vocabulary. Swing weight is how the paddle moves. Twist weight is how it forgives.

How to Use the Numbers

Here's where most explainers leave you hanging. They give you the concepts and then wave at a range like "swing weights run from 100 to 140" without telling you what number to actually look for. The problem is that the answer depends entirely on the shape of the paddle, because each shape carries its weight differently. Elongated paddles put more mass farther from your hand, so their swing weights run naturally higher. Widebodies keep the mass closer in and spread it toward the edges, so they swing lighter and resist twisting better. A 116 swing weight is heavy for a widebody, dead average for a hybrid, and light for an elongated. Same number, three different meanings.

So instead of one range, you need a table. We built these from measured data across hundreds of paddles, broken out by shape. Find the shape you're shopping, then check where a paddle's numbers land.

A note on the extremes: Very Low and Very High mark true outliers, not just the light or heavy end of normal. A paddle in the Very High swing weight column for its shape is a genuine tank, the kind of thing former tennis players seek out and everyone else finds exhausting. The middle three columns describe the vast majority of what's on the market.

One important thing before you start hunting for the lowest numbers you can find: high swing weight is not a flaw. It's a tradeoff. More swing weight means the paddle plows through the ball instead of getting pushed around by it, which shows up as more power on full swings and more stability when you're blocking a hard drive or resetting out of trouble. What you give up is hand speed. Low swing weight buys you quickness at the net and costs you that mass behind the ball.

And here's the part that surprises people: going too low can actually work against you physically. A very light-swinging paddle transfers more impact shock to your arm because there's less mass absorbing the collision with the ball. If you deal with tennis elbow and impact shock is part of the problem, dropping to the lightest paddle you can find may make things worse, not better. A moderate swing weight that lets the paddle do more of the work is often the friendlier choice for your arm. The goal isn't low. The goal is the highest swing weight you can comfortably move for every shot in your game.

Matching the Numbers to Your Game

The table tells you what the numbers mean. Here's how they combine for the way you actually play.

The counterpuncher who lives at the kitchen. If your game is fast hands, quick counters, and winning the firefight, prioritize a Low to Medium swing weight for your shape so the paddle gets around fast, paired with a Medium or better twist weight so your blocks stay stable when someone tees off on you. A hybrid around 110 to 113 swing weight with a twist weight of 6.4 or better is a classic setup here.

The driver who wins from the baseline. If your points end with pace, look High on swing weight for your shape. That extra mass is where plow-through and putaway power come from, and you'll feel it most on full ground strokes. An elongated in the 120 to 124 range gives you that heavy ball, and since elongated shapes naturally run lower on twist weight, a little lead tape at three and nine o'clock shores up the misses.

The player battling arm trouble. Counterintuitively, don't chase the lightest paddle on the shelf. Look Medium on swing weight so the paddle absorbs impact instead of your elbow, and prioritize a High twist weight, because off-center hits are where the nastiest shock comes from and a stable face takes the sting out of them. A widebody with a twist weight of 7.2 or better is the most forgiving platform available.

The all-court player who wants one paddle for everything. Sit in the Medium column on both numbers for your preferred shape. You give up the extremes in exchange for a paddle that never feels like the wrong tool, which is worth more than most players realize.

The newer player still finding their contact. Forgiveness is worth more than power while your sweet-spot consistency develops, so weight twist weight heavily. A widebody in the High or Very High twist weight column keeps mishits playable, and a Low to Medium swing weight keeps the paddle easy to maneuver while you build your swings.

FAQ

Can I lower my paddle's swing weight? Not really. Adding weight to the handle lowers the balance point, which some players perceive as more maneuverable, but it never lowers the swing weight. You can't make something swing lighter by adding mass to it. The two real options are removing weight from high on the paddle, which usually isn't practical, or choking up on the handle, which brings the mass closer to your hand and effectively reduces swing weight by a meaningful amount.

Can I raise it? Yes, easily, and where you put the weight matters enormously. Tape placed low near the throat barely moves swing weight. The same tape at the top corners of the face raises it substantially. If you want stability without much added swing weight, stay at or below the midpoint of the paddle, right around three and nine o'clock, which is also the placement that raises twist weight the most.

Is a five point swing weight difference actually noticeable? For most players, yes. Five points is right at the threshold where you can feel it swinging two paddles back to back. Ten points is obvious to anybody. Differences under five points take a sensitive hand to detect, so don't agonize over a two point gap between paddles you're comparing.

Why do reviewers list a swing weight range instead of one number? Manufacturing variance. Paddles of the same model vary in static weight from unit to unit, and swing weight varies with it. A model listed at 112 to 115 means your individual paddle will land somewhere in that window. Judge the range against the table, not a single number.

Is high twist weight always better? Mostly, but not infinitely. Twist weight is the closest thing to a free lunch in paddle specs since more stability rarely hurts, but stacking a lot of weight at three and nine can slow down wrist-roll motions at the net. If you're a wristy player who lives on flicks and rolls, there's a point where maximum twist weight starts costing you. For most players, more is better within the ranges on the table.

My paddle isn't listed with these specs. How do I find them? More manufacturers publish swing weight now than ever, but coverage is still spotty. Independent testing databases fill most of the gaps, and if you know the numbers for a paddle you already like, you can use the table to find its band and shop for paddles in the same one.

One of the staples of summertime television is Big Brother. And in just a few days, the long-running reality show will feature a particularly intriguing contestant: Rome Seymour.

Seymour, a 28-year-old pickleball coach from Delray Beach, Florida, has competed in several men’s doubles qualifiers on the PPA Tour over the past few years. This summer, he’ll trade the courts for the Big Brother house, cutting himself off from the outside world as he competes for a $750,000 grand prize.

“I would describe myself as bashful, extroverted, and extremely excitable,” said Seymour. “To be on Big Brother is a dream. I’ve never felt anything more exciting than this.”

Although, Seymour may want to reserve that level of excitement—because anyone who’s witnessed a 19-19 DreamBreaker between the New Jersey 5s and the St. Louis Shock at an MLP event might argue that nothing tops that kind of intensity for a pickleball enthusiast.

As a pickleball coach, Seymour seems well-equipped to succeed on the show. Competing in Big Brother requires a mix of athleticism for demanding physical challenges and sharp thinking to navigate the game’s strategy, two areas that are second nature to anyone who spends serious time on the court.

Then there’s the social element. At its core, Big Brother is a relationship game, and there may be no better training ground for that than pickleball. Whether it’s managing emotions while playing against bangers, keeping composure in tense moments, or building quick connections with new partners and opponents, the court constantly tests your ability to work with different personalities. Those same skills can be a major advantage inside the house.

At the end of the day, pickleball and reality competition shows share the same core ingredients: physical ability, mental toughness, strategic awareness, and strong social instincts. It might be a bit early to call it, but could Rome Seymour be our BB28 winner? It’s not out of the question.

In his preseason interviews, Seymour made one thing clear. He’s “extremely competitive”and “talks a lot of trash.” That should make him not only a fun opponent, but also an entertaining houseguest.

More than anything, though, I’m excited for Seymour’s profession to get a spotlight in front of a massive audience—many of whom probably have no idea pickleball coaches even exist, let alone that you can be a pro at it. You can already picture the moment: the houseguests standing in a circle for those first introductions, Seymour says he’s a pro pickleball coach, and it cuts to reactions like, “A pro pickleball coach!? That’s a thing!?”

As the summer unfolds and conversations turn to life outside the house, pickleball is bound to come up again and again, giving the sport some valuable exposure.

By the end of the season, don’t be surprised if the houseguests, the production crew, and even fans watching at home feel inspired to pick up a paddle and give it a try, all because one contestant happens to be a coach.

I didn’t expect pickleball to make its way into my favorite reality shows this quickly, but I’m glad it has. Now, it’s just a matter of waiting for the action to begin.

The Edward Jones MLP Mid-Season Tournament starts Wednesday at Belknap Park in Grand Rapids, MI.

This is the only event of the season featuring all 20 MLP teams. Four additional teams will also be participating—College All-Stars, Team Australia, Team Canada, and Team Europe—making this a 24-team event.

It is double-elimination; the highest a team that loses can finish is 3rd place. Seeds No. 9-24 begin play on Wednesday, and the top 8 seeds begin play on Thursday.

Additional standings points for the regular season will be on the line for top finishers, including 10 bonus standings points for 1st place, 6 bonus standings points for 2nd place, and 4 bonus standings points for 3rd place.

Before signing with the PPA Tour, Abbigal Hatton spent her days working as a train conductor—a career path few professional athletes can claim.

Her road to pro pickleball was anything but conventional, filled with unexpected twists that ultimately led her to the sport's biggest stage. 

“After college, it was 2020 and I was working part-time in sports medicine physical therapy. One day, I went into the physical therapy gym where these old people were playing pickleball and they invited me to play,” recalled Hatton. “Eventually, I became the pickleball coordinator at the facility and started putting tournaments together.” 

At the time, though, Hatton had no plans of becoming a professional pickleball player.

Instead, she packed up, moved to Nebraska, and began a career as a train conductor.

“I did that for about a year and a half. My dad was a director, so I grew up with it. He was on the maintenance side, and I was on the transportation side. I actually drove the trains, and he worked on the tracks,” mentioned Hatton. “But it’s a different type of career. It’s not a woman’s career. It’s a bunch of men, but I liked it. It was cool to learn the trains and how they work.”

As a train conductor, however, Hatton spent much of her time on the road.

“When I first started, I traveled a lot. I worked in Nebraska, so I’ve been all over there, Ohio, North and South Dakota. We would basically drop the train off, then we’d stay there, wait for the next train, and we’d bring it back to the hub,” she explained. “But the travel and hours were a lot, so I decided I wanted to work in the yard. That was a lot easier. I worked eight-hour days instead of 12-hour days.” 

About a year and a half later, Hatton was furloughed where she moved back home to Texas to be closer to family, with the intention of eventually working with trains again. However, when she returned to Texas, she started playing pickleball again. 

“I met Noe Khlif and his wife Jen, I met Sarah Williams, Sam Parker and started playing with all the Dallas based pros. They suggested I start playing tournaments. There was an MLP tournament in Austin, so I drove down with Jen to watch. And that’s when I saw Jack Sock, Federico Staksrud, and all the big names playing and I thought to myself, ‘Oh I want to start doing this,’” Hatton said. 

Hatton quickly began competing on the PPA Challenger Series before earning a PPA Tour contract in early 2026. She now competes for the Carolina Hogs in Major League Pickleball. Although the opportunity came unexpectedly, she has never looked back on her decision to change careers.

“I absolutely made the right choice. I played basketball in college and grew up playing volleyball, golf, stuff like that. I love getting to play and compete as a professional athlete,” praised Hatton. “It brings me back to my high school and college days, which were so fun.”

Through every career change, Hatton has embraced new opportunities with optimism, following her passions while remaining excited about where life will take her next.

“I’m still learning about myself. I’m learning about how I work, who I am, and who I want to be because pickleball is a small part of my life,” she concluded. “It’s not everything, but it’s a really good part of my life right now.”

Stat: Four of the top six individual winning percentages belong to the Shock (Tardio (2), Fahey (4), Patriquin (5), and Bright (6))

Player to watch: Kate Fahey. She has been clutch at crunch time – will her play be the difference in the Shock securing the mid-season tourney title?

Los Angeles Mad Drops (3):

Tidbit: Have placed first in their group in all 3 events (and won the first event of the year in Dallas).

Stat: Catherine Parenteau and Jade Kawamoto are just 9-8 on the season. 

Player to watch: Ben Johns. Can he put the team on his back like he did in Dallas and take the Mad Drops to the title?

Brooklyn Pickleball Team (4):

Tidbit: After not playing in the first 2 events, they have been very consistent, with two 3rd place finishes and a 2nd at home in the last event. 

Stat: As the “singles specialist”, Chris Haworth went 8-4 in their lone DreamBreaker, a 23-21 thriller win over Dallas.   

Player to watch: Riley Newman. He’s their highest ranked individual player at 20-5. Will his play and energy be the difference for a title run for Brooklyn?

Columbus Sliders (5):

Tidbit: Made the big trade, sending out Danni-Elle Townsend to Dallas for Hurricane Tyra Black, but then finished a disappointing 5th in St. Petersburg. 

Stat: No players in the top 10 of individual winning percentage.

Player to watch: CJ Klinger. Yes, all eyes will be on HTB, but Klinger is the key for this team to find its 2025 form and win the mid-season title. 

Palm Beach Royals (6):

Tidbit: Have finished 4th twice and 5th twice despite the musical chairs for the men in their lineup. 

Stat: Sofia Sewing and Tina Pisnik have been sparkling, going 18-4 with wins over Bright and Fahey and Todd and Black to name a couple. 

Player to watch: Casey Diamond. Added via waivers but just 7-11 so far. Will he be a difference maker or will the vets McGuffin and Bar be healthy enough to be the keys to Palm Beach victories?

Texas Ranchers (7):

Tidbit: Secured their marquee win by beating the Fives in New York, but a tiebreaker kept them from the top spot in the Group Standings. 

Stat: Nico Acevedo is 19-14 with Texas since the big Dylan Frazier trade. 

Player to watch: Kaitlin Christian. Went .500 in her return to the Ranchers after the trade necessitated by the Layne Sleeth injury. Can she be the difference in multiple upsets, especially in a DreamBreaker? 

Dallas Flash (8):

Tidbit: Defending champs have neither woman (Black or Johnson) who helped them to the title in Grand Rapids in 2025. 

Stat: JW Johnson is just 18-14 on the season. 

Player to watch: Danni-Elle Townsend. What a debut for the Flash in NY, going 9-3. Can the Aussie inspire the Flash back into the mix for a top 3 finish?

Las Vegas Night Owls (9):

Tidbit: Have used their entire roster throughout the season to date but may dial in set pairings (at least the men) after trading out Blaine Hovenier. 

Stat: Zoey Wang (12-9) is the only Night Owl over .500 on the season. 

Player to watch: Roscoe Bellamy. Can he be the stabilizing force with the youngster Clayton Powell added to the lineup to help them find some wins in Grand Rapids?

SoCal Hard Eights (10):

Tidbit: After just one point in their first event, they secured 12 in Austin and 8 in New York to put them above the cut line for the playoffs. 

Stat: Armaan Bhatia leads their individual records within the team at 14-13. 

Player to watch: Cailyn Campbell. So much potential and getting more comfortable on the left in women’s doubles. Can she find the next gear for the dice to pull some upsets in Michigan?

Orlando Squeeze (11):

Tidbit: Earned just one point in St. Petersburg, thus their lower than expected seed at the mid-season tournament.  

Stat: Staksrud and Sock were 8-3, but have lost 3 of their last 4 and now sit at 9-6 on the season. 

Player to watch: Lacy Schneemann. If high ceiling Lacy Schneemann is on display in Michigan, she could be the difference for multiple wins over higher seeds.

Utah Black Diamonds (12):

Tidbit: With 16 points in 3 events, they hold the last playoff spot heading into the mid season tourney. 

Stat: Zero individual players above .500. 

Player to watch: Connor Garnett. Was removed from the lineup for a match but then jumped back in and has the upside potential to lead his team to a few wins in Grand Rapids. 

Chicago Slice (13):

Tidbit: Made a trade with the future in mind, bringing in Elsie Hendershot and John Lucian Goins and shipping out Hunter Johnson and Mari Humberg. 

Stat: Jamie Wei has been money in DreamBreakers, winning 11 of 16 points as the Slice are 2-0 in bonus pickleball. 

Player to watch: Elsie Hendershot. The 13 year-old fan favorite continues to gain valuable reps - will those reps lead to victories?

Atlanta Bouncers (14):

Tidbit: Mari Humberg slots in next to Jessie Irvine post trade, giving them a veteran laden lineup. 

Stat: Jay Devilliers and Jaume Martinez Vich are 9th overall with an 8-6 record in men’s doubles. 

Player to watch: Mari Humberg. New addition could be just what the doctor ordered for Atlanta to bounce a higher seed. 

Florida Smash (15):

Tidbit: After earning just 1 point in front of their raucous home crowd in St. Pete, they had their best showing in New York, earning 6 standings points. 

Stat: Connor Mogle was added to the roster and went 5-3, now toting the best winning percentage on the team. 

Player to watch: Mogle. Is he the difference to help this team find a win or two in Michigan?

California Black Bears (16):

Tidbit: Have only played in 2 events, earning 6 points in their second outing. 

Stat: Have just 3 wins in 10 matches so far in 2026. 

Player to watch: Sahra Dennehy. Returns back to the states after winning women’s doubles at PPA Tour Asia - can that confidence carry over to MLP?

Miami Pickleball Club (17):

Tidbit: Potentially dangerous DreamBreaker team due to all of their transactions (Ford, Frazier, Dunlap, Fujiwara). 

Stat: Have won just 4 of 15 matches on the season. 

Player to watch: Dylan Frazier. Can he help produce some wins (while also showcasing why a top team should potentially trade for him)?

Bay Area Breakers (18):

Tidbit: Blaine Hovenier brought in via trade gives the Breakers another solid MLP vet to pair with Pablo Tellez or Len Yang.
